Breastfeeding at the beach

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

The heat of summer is upon us and I find we are spending as much time as we can at the beach. I love the beach: the smell of the water, the smell of decades old suntan lotion soaked sand, the sounds of the waves and seagulls, mmm, there is nothing about the beach I don’t love. I don’t even mind the sand from the lake bottom that gets caught in my bosom while I crash waves with my body. I get a bit of a giggle when I have to rinse my breasts before I nurse my daughter under the umbrella.

I admint I do try to rinse in the lake, but if it’s not quite working out comes the water bottle for a discreet rinse and repeat.  I have received some odd looks and those silent “cover up!” stares, not that I care. Hey, I need clean breasts to breastfeed thanks, do you appreciate sand in your drink?

I also wear a low-cut wrap style bathing suit so I can easily move it aside to nurse, which doesn’t usually garner any stares. It’s the tube-top style suit that gets the gasps and murmurs of “this isn’t a topless beach.”  To which I say, “well it should be, it would make it easier for me to breastfeed!”
